Phase Project Completed
Activity Erosion protection
Construction timing Construction began in April 2023 and was completed in August 2023
Overview

In December 2019 heavy rain washed out a concrete block weir at the mouth of Stokes Valley Stream to help protect against stream bed erosion. Erosion of the stream bed would have affected a major sewer pipe.

A new, permanent rock weir was built to protect the stream bed from erosion.

Wellington Region's waterways are home to at least 20 species of native freshwater fish. Most need to move freely from the river to the sea to reproduce.

This work also included construction of a structure that makes it easier for native fish to move over the weir to complete these important journeys.
