Kapiti water quality report 'generally good'

  • Published Date 30 Jun 2016

Our Recreational Water Quality report card for Kapiti shows most of the swimming spots we monitor in Kapiti have good water quality.

"Nearly three quarters of sites we monitor had an overall B grade or better which mean there was a low risk of illness" says GWRC Senior Environmental Scientist Summer Greenfield.

"The best site for swimming last summer was the upper reaches of the Otaki River.

Last summer the warm, stable weather created perfect conditions for toxic algae but we only saw low levels (less than 20% cover ) along the Otaki and Waikanae rivers," says Ms Greenfield.

A dog did died after being in the Otaki River last February but this could not be confirmed as toxic algae related as only low cyanobacteria cover was recorded at the site and toxins were not detected. Pet owners are reminded to keep a look out for signs of toxic algae.

We'll be starting our upcoming summer monitoring programme in December. We'll keep the community continually informed of water quality so they can get out and enjoy their recreational activities safely.
