Submissions called for on Pinehaven Stream Flood Management Plan

  • Published Date 18 Sep 2015

Greater Wellington Regional Council is resuming formal consultation on the Pinehaven Stream Flood Management Plan, which is designed to manage flooding in the Pinehaven/Silverstream catchment, and inviting the public to make submission by 16 October 2015.

The regional council initially started consultation last year but halted the process to update the plan following the completion of an additional technical audit to confirm that the flood mapping was accurate and fit for purpose.

"We're now looking for a strong response from the community on the plan to ensure we listen to peoples' views on our proposals," says Greater Wellington Regional Councillor and chair of the Hutt Valley Flood Management Subcommittee, Sandra Greig.

"We want to know how the plan affects you and how it can be improved. This is a big opportunity to move the process forward and I urge the community to take it. It is important that we get a consensus from the community on how it should be protected from floods."

Ms Greig says the flood protection project team will review all feedback, take it into consideration and if necessary make changes to the Flood Management Plan before presenting a final version to the subcommittee for approval in the first quarter of 2016.

The resumption of formal consultation follows extensive consultation with the community since 2009 over the development of the plan. Since then an intensive schedule of engagement has seen the regional council run open days and public meetings in the community, hold individual meetings with landowners and others directly affected by the proposals and receive submissions and correspondence on the plan.

Members of the Pinehaven/Silverstream community can find the proposed Pinehaven Stream Flood Management Plan at http://www.gw.govt.nz/Pinehavenstream.

To give quick feedback people can go to http://www.gw.govt.nz/Pinehavenstream, where they will find the plan and a submission form. Otherwise they can provide feedback via email at info@gw.govt.nz or write to the regional council at Pinehaven Stream, Po Box 11646, Manners Street, Wellington 6142.
