The Waitohu Stream and Dune Care Group was established around 25 years ago in response to flooding and the degradation of the local dune and stream ecosystems.

Since then, the group has worked collaboratively with Kāpiti Coast District Council, Greater Wellington, the Department of Conservation, mana whenua, and the wider community including local schools and young people.

Through dedicated planting and pest control, the group has helped re-establish a healthy, self-sustaining dune system that now supports a diverse range of native plants and wildlife. Today, the group grows around 700–800 plants each year, with additional support from Kāpiti Coast District Council bringing the total to approximately 2,000 new plants going into the area annually.

Many wonderful people have contributed over the years. Some have lifelong connections to the area and fond memories of childhood days spent there. Others have found that spending time outdoors, working alongside like-minded people and caring for te taiao (nature), has been both rewarding and restorative. For some of the young volunteers, the experience has even sparked careers in nature-based work.

The group continues to inspire others through links with restoration groups in the Horowhenua area, as well as library displays and school planting days.

Anyone is welcome to join the regular Monday morning working bees — dogs and kids included!
