Members of the Public Transport Advisory Group help shape the future of public transport in Greater Wellington.

Apply now

Greater Wellington’s Public Transport Advisory Group provides insights and advice, from a customer and community perspective, on public transport to inform the business of Metlink and the Public Transport Committee. Re-established by Council in late 2025, the Advisory Group will support the work of local government during the 2025 – 2028 triennium.

We welcome applications to form the new membership of the Public Transport Advisory Group. This is a great opportunity for people from across the Greater Wellington Region who are passionate about public transport.

Advisory Group members will each have unique perspectives as customers of Metlink, with lived experience of our services. They’ll also be able to take a ‘bigger picture’ view of Wellington’s public transport network and broader issues affecting public transport.

Overall, membership of the Advisory Group will be chosen to provide:

  • A broad range of perspectives that represent customer and community needs;
  • Geographic spread; and
  • Demographic diversity.

Up to 30 people will be appointed as members of the Public Transport Advisory Group. Members will be chosen to represent the following perspectives on public transport and active modes of travel though out the Greater Wellington Region:

  • Active mode users (walking, cycling and micro-mobility)
  • Business/retail sector
  • Disability/accessibility
  • Employers
  • Larger-framed users
  • LGBTQIA+
  • Mana whenua, Māori
  • Off peak users (rail and bus)
  • Peak users (rail and bus)
  • Rural
  • Senior citizens
  • Tertiary students
  • Transport dependent
  • Transport equity
  • Youth

More than one member may be appointed to represent a single perspective, and one member may be appointed to represent more than one perspective.

Meetings of the Public Transport Advisory Group

The Public Transport Advisory Group meets up to four times a year with opportunity to schedule more meetings as needed. Meetings are held three weeks before the Public Transport Committee meets.

Metlink officers host Public Transport Advisory Group members in person on Thursday evenings at Greater Wellington’s office on Cuba Street from 4.00 pm – 6.30pm.

In 2026, Advisory Group meetings are on 14 May, 24 September and 5 November.

An agenda and pre-reading are emailed to members the week before meetings to enable preparation and participation in facilitated discussions. At meetings, Advisory Group members are encouraged to actively listen and constructively contribute to discussions by representing their chosen perspectives as customers of Metlink. During these discussions, it’s important for members to understand how their lived experience relates to the wider context of Wellington’s public transport network and the broader issues affecting public transport.

Remuneration

To recognise contribution, Advisory Group members can claim Greater Wellington’s standard daily meeting fee of $250 per meeting and mileage allowances and/or public transport expenses for attending scheduled meetings.
