Greater Wellington will officially take ownership of Gollan’s Valley Station on 25 July 2025.

This 1366-hectare property sits between the two sections of East Harbour Regional Park, connecting the Northern Forest to Parangarahu Lakes. The land includes valuable wetlands, native bush, and open spaces, making it one of the most significant land acquisitions in recent times.

As exciting as this purchase is, the area will not be open to the public for some time.

What happens next?

After settlement, we’ll enter a 12-month care and maintenance phase. During this time, we’ll be:

  • Securing and monitoring the site
  • Managing pests and weeds
  • Assessing the land’s ecological values
  • Beginning long-term planning for restoration and future use

The property is not open to the public and will remain closed for at least the next couple of years while this work is underway.

Working in partnership with mana whenua

The land at Gollan’s Valley is highly significant to mana whenua and contains important heritage features. We are committed to working in partnership with Taranaki Whānui to enable this land to fulfil both its cultural and environmental potential.

It’s early days, but we are investigating the best way to achieve this and what the options are for co-governance and collaborative delivery. The partnership approach will guide our plans for this special taonga and help create a space that all our communities can treasure and enjoy.

How you can help

The best way you can support this mahi is by staying out of the area. This allows our teams to focus on restoration, rather than enforcement.

We’ll share updates as the project progresses and will look to create coordinated volunteer opportunities alongside restoration groups in the future.
