Wellington’s Safest Boat Competition

This summer, our Harbours team will be out on the water chatting with boaties, checking safety gear, and making sure everyone is doing their part to stay safe. If your boat has everything it needs, you’ll be invited to enter Wellington’s Safest Boat - with a chance to win a trailer boat engine service valued at $700, supplied by KP Marine. The competition is open only to Wellington region residents with trailer boats, outboard service only, excludes E-TEC engines.

To enter the draw, you’ll just need to provide your first and last name, and a phone number and/or email address. On 2 March 2026, we’ll randomly draw one lucky winner and get in touch using the details you’ve provided.

What we’ll be looking for

To be eligible for entry, your boat and crew must meet all safety criteria:

1. You know the day’s weather forecast
2. Everyone on board has a properly fitting lifejacket (worn or easily accessible)
3. You’re carrying two forms of waterproof communication (mobile phone, VHF, EPIRB or PLB)
4. You’ve logged a trip report or told someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back
5. You have a form of secondary propulsion (oars are fine!)
6. You carry a bucket or bilge pump (or both)
7. A suitable anchor and warp are onboard
8. A knife is onboard for safety
9. No Bylaw breaches during the interaction or on the day (e.g. correct lights if required)
10. You have enough fuel for the trip and your vessel appears well-maintained
