Flood hazard advice

A river level recording station in the Mangaroa Valley

We provide flood warnings to the region's urban and rural communities, using a network of rainfall and river-level recording stations. These stations transmit information via radio signal to our computer database.

  • Every 15 minutes, each recording station compares the information it records with a pre-set alarm level. If the rainfall or river-level reaches the alarm point, the system automatically warns staff.
  • After receiving a heavy rain warning from weather forecasters, we closely monitor the information transmitted by the recording stations.
  • Where possible, local authorities and landowners are given advance warning of the situation. The incoming data is updated every hour and flood predictions are adjusted accordingly.
