Escape with us this summer.......

Explore the regional parks and forests on your doorstep with Greater Wellington's Great Outdoors Summer Events programme. We offer more than 50 events, set in some of the region's most spectacular landscapes.

Nearly all events are within one hour's drive of Wellington city and hosted by local experts.

Bookings and information

  • Most events are free. You must book ahead for events with maximum numbers. Look out for thesymbol and contact the Bookings Officer, bookings@gw.govt.nz or 04 830 4041
  • For paid events, payment must be made within five working days of making your booking to confirm your enrolment. 
  • You can also make a booking for an event by going to our GOSE Bookings page.

Pay via internet banking (phone or email the booking officer for internet payment instructions), or by eftpos at the Greater Wellington Regional Council, Shed 39, Harbour Quays, Wellington or 1056 Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt.

What to bring
Weather conditions can change quickly. Always take a backpack with a waterproof jacket, warm clothes, tramping boots or strong lace-up shoes, water and a picnic lunch and/or snacks. On trips longer than two hours take thermal leggings, a long-sleeved top, warm hat and gloves. Always take a sun hat and sunscreen. The parks contain fresh air - please be smokefree.

Cancellations
Cancellations are posted on the Breeze(94.1FM) . Cancellation messages on the day will be left on the bookings officer's phone after 7:30am. No refunds will be givem for non-attendance. An administraion fee will apply to all refunds,  other than events that are cancelled.

 Public Transport 

Plan your trip by visiting Metlink at metlink.org.nz and using the online journey planner or call 0800 801 700. Look for the PT symbol for events that are accessible by public transport.

Wainuiomata Recreation Area, 10.30am-12noon

Saturday 10 January
Nature Discovery Treasure Hunt
Kaitoke Regional Park, 11am-12.30pm
Fun for the whole family.  Use clues hidden in the forest to find the treasure.  Bring a picnic lunch for afterwards. 


Sun 11 Jan - Sun 8 March
Paws in the Park Summer Series
Bring your dog and explore the beautiful dog friendly tracks in the Wellington region, 10am start. Find out more on our Paws in the Park page.

Old Forest Walk
Wainuiomata Water Collection Area, 
9.30am-2pm, Max 30 people

Hear the spectacular birdsong of the Wainuiomata/Orongorongo Water Collection Area.  Walk among some of the region’s biggest and oldest native trees.

Kev the Wheeling Kiwi 
Hutt River Trail, 10.30am-12noon
Meet Kev for a stroll down the Hutt River Trail.
 

 

 


Thursday 22th January
Kev the Kiwi's Scavenger Hunt
Belmont Regional Park, 10.30am-12noon
Join Kev the Kiwi on a scavenger hunt to the Korokoro Dam. 

 


Sunday 25 January
Whitireia Wander – leaping lizards
Whitireia Park, Thornley St entrance, 1.30pm-4pm
Join a guided walk with the Park Ranger and the Whitireia Park Restoration Group to find out why Whitireia park is home to so many lizards.   
 

Thursday 29 January 
Kev the Kiwi does camp games
Kaitoke Regional Park, 10.30am-12noon
Take your buggy to Rivendell before looping back along the Pakuratahi River walk. Join Kev for some old school camp games. 


Saturday 7 March 
Rivendell Archway revival
Kaitoke Regional Park, 10am -11.30am
Join GWRC and Ted from Adventure Safari as a new Rivendell archway replica from the Lord of the Rings trilogy is officially opened in the park.
