Carterton lies on the historical floodplain of the Mangatarere Stream and there is a recognised flood hazard to Carterton if the stream should break out of its channel during heavy rain.

Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) is updating flood hazard information for the Mangatarere Stream floodplain. A preliminary flood hazard assessment has been carried out to gain an understanding of the potential hazard and to define the study area for a detailed Flood Hazard Assessment. This has resulted in the definition of a “flood study area”.

A more detailed Flood Hazard Assessment is currently scheduled to start in late 2018 or early 2019 (depending on confirmation of GWRC’s Long Term Plan) and we will be in touch at that time to update you on the project and opportunities for you to be involved. This website will also be updated as work progresses. The detailed assessment will help us to develop a full understanding of the hazard and what steps may need to be taken to manage it. It is important to us that the local community gets a chance to contribute its knowledge and to participate in the hazard assessment.

GWRC and CDC will use the preliminary information to guide new development and building decisions in the meantime.

If you would like more information about the flood hazard at your property, please use the contact details on the right hand side. Please be prepared to give your name, phone number or email address, property address and the legal description of your property if you have it.
