There are a number of ways that you can get involved with the management and enhancement of the Waikanae River Environment.
The GWRC Flood Protection Department holds an annual public walkover of the Waikanae River, where flood protection projects, operational activities and environmental enhancements are discussed. To register your interest in attending, please email email@example.com or phone 0800 4WN REG (0800 496 734).
Friends of Waikanae River (FWR)
The FWR have a formal role in monitoring the management of the Waikanae River for flood protection and liaises regularly with Flood Protection Department.
They work closely with all interested people to identify opportunities for restoration of the river environment and try and ensure they happen.
The FWR have planted over 75,000 plants in the river corridor over the past 15 years, making a huge contribution to the restoration of the river corridor.
The FWR have set up a nursery where they grow eco-sourced native plants for each planting season in winter. They hold regular working bees.
