Climate change

Greater Wellington is responding to climate change in a range of ways.

We have joined the Communities for Climate Change Protection - New Zealand programme and we’re already engaged in activities that will help reduce the effects of climate change:

  • Travel demand management – we’re leading programmes within Greater Wellington and other organisations that encourage walking, cycling, carpooling or using public transport. (This helps to reduce emissions from private vehicles and business operations.)
  • Promoting and investing in the region’s public transport network
  • Coordinating tree planting days (trees absorb carbon dioxide – a greenhouse gas). Community working bees and planting days are listed on our events page. Find out how your corporate group can organise a planting day or another environmental project on our corporate volunteers page
  • Investigating local solutions for sustainable energy use, including wind farms (a source of renewable energy with low emissions)
  • Investing in sustainable business programmes that encourage emission reductions
  • Encouraging sustainable households through our Be the Difference programme
  • Investment in flood protection – changing weather patterns may increase flooding.
