Plan Goal 3: A variety of landscape settings are preserved and enhanced reflecting social values; historic heritage features are protected and interpreted for visitors.

The work of this goal overlaps with many of the others. Through the parks restoration programme and phasing out high impact grazing activities, park landscapes will progressively be restored.

Through the parks storytelling project (see Plan Goal 2) and access enhancements, many more people will be able to access significant places in parks and learn more about them.

Other work to preserve and enhance cultural heritage includes the Baring Head / Ōrua-pouanui lighthouse complex restoration and supporting a proposed Heritage Listing with Heritage New Zealand. We are also working with mana whenua on park names and place names and kaitiaki restoration and heritage plans.

Natural processes of restoration at Parangarahu Lakes have been underway since stock grazing ended about 15 years ago. Mana whenua Taranaki Whānui and conservation group MIRO support restoration of this beautiful park landscape.
