Notice is given under section 28(1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001 that electors of the Wellington Region have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to have effect for the 2025 and 2028 triennial elections of the Wellington Regional Council.
A valid demand for a poll must:
- Be made in writing.
- Be signed by at least five percent of the number of electors enrolled as eligible to vote at the 2022 triennial election of the Wellington Regional Council - this will require the signatures of 19,620 eligible electors.
- State, for every elector who signs the demand, their name (in accordance the requirements of section 30) and the address for which they are qualified as an elector of the Wellington Regional Council.
- Be delivered to the principal office of the Wellington Regional Council at 100 Cuba Street, Te Aro, Wellington. A valid demand must be delivered by 4:30pm on 11 December 2023 for the result of the poll to have effect for the 2025 and 2028 triennial elections of the Wellington Regional Council.
The Local Electoral Act 2001 provides for the choice between the First Past the Post (FPP) and Single Transferable Voting (STV) electoral systems.
Unless a poll determines otherwise, the STV electoral system will be used for the Wellington Regional Council’s 2025 triennial election.
