Exclusion zones and restricted access
Exclusion zones are in place in the Parangarahu Lakes Area to prevent the spread of pest plants.
In March-April 2011 Canadian pondweed (Elodea canadensis) was found in Lake Kohangatera and Brazilian Waterweed (Egeria densa) was found in the uppermost reaches of Gollans Swamp upstream of the lakes. These weeds have the potential to displace native vegetation and lower biodiversity values in the future.
Greater Wellington has taken action to prevent the spread of weeds in Lake Kohangatera by creating exclusion zones around the infestation, and has organised further inspections in the Gollans Valley swamp area.
This will not affect walking and cycling access along the tracks of the Parangarahu Lakes Area.
