Phase Construction
Project status Trail re-opened
Activity Erosion protection
Overview

Recent rains and severe weather eroded a part of the popular Hutt River Trail near the Royal Wellington Golf Club in Upper Hutt. We will reopen the trail once we complete construction and the area is safe for users. The construction involves building a protective rock wall and rock groynes to defend the river bank from further erosion.

By the way, rock groynes are structures built perpendicular or slightly obliquely to the bank keeping in mind the tightness of the bend, slope of the river bed and material of the bank. Groynes help to mitigate erosion risks.

We will rebuild 320m of bank edge and install around 5,500 tonnes of protective rock.

Updates

Track re-opened ahead of a schedule on 24 December 2021, in time for walkers and cyclists to enjoy it during their summer holidays. Further remedial work and planning will take place in 2022.
