Whangaehu River Group

Martinborough

The Whangaehu Care Group are restoring a 1km section of the Whangaehu Stream just upstream from its confluence with the Huangarua River. This initially involved clearing large willow trees on both sides of the stream along with progressively planting native species. Over five thousand seedlings were planted over a 4 year period.

The care group hold 2-3 big planting days each year along with numerous working bees throughout the year to release those plantings from weeds. Planting projects have involved groups made up of friends and family of the landowners and, in recent times, Wellington High School students as part of their environmental studies.
