Celebrate our region’s biodiversity at a free Wetland Wonders Discovery Day at Lake Wairarapa Sunday 8 March 2015.

Wairarapa Moana covers a huge geographical area and there are many native birds, plants and fish that call it home, some are classified as rare or endangered. Hear from experts and enjoy interactive presentations at this free, family-oriented event: Wetland Wonders Discovery Day.

“We are really looking forward to sharing some of the secrets of our fabulous wetland, the largest wetland complex in the North Island,” says GWRC Biodiversity Advisor, Toni de Lautour.

“We have planned this event to help people understand more about our region’s wetland species – it’s hard to know what you are looking at unless you have a handy expert with you!”

Visitors will have two opportunities to hear short informative talks, both taking place at 10.30 and 11.30am. NIWA Scientist, Mark Fenwick will talk about käkahi, native freshwater mussels found only in New Zealand, and local expert John Rhodes, will explain more about the geological setting of Wairarapa Moana.

Alongside these speakers visitors can uncover more about native birds, plants and animals, cultural heritage and wetland management.

“We anticipate that visitors will wander around the seven interactive presentations at their leisure and slot in listening to each of the scheduled speakers.”
