Tsunami evacuation zone maps
Greater Wellington and GNS have worked together to develop maps which identify areas within the region which may be at risk from tsunami. These maps will be used by local councils to develop localised evacuation plans. It is important to note that the zones are indicative only and simply identify the areas that each of the local councils wish to evacuate to protect residents for different size tsunami. These zones are ‘evacuation zones’ and are not ‘inundation zones’.
Civil defence starts at home
Emergencies occur every day in urban and rural areas. These emergencies generally involve risk to few people at any one time and are dealt with by Police, Fire Service or Ambulance and medical services in our communities.
There is always the possibility that something much more severe could occur. In these situations the day-to-day staffing and equipment levels of our emergency services and other agencies will be insufficient to deal with the scale of events as quickly as they normally do.
While we have plans to manage the consequences of major emergencies, overseas experience shows that most people will have to look after themselves and the people they are with for at least three days. Only the most seriously affected are likely to be assisted by normal response agencies during this period.
The better prepared you are, the safer and more comfortable you and those you care for will be. No one else can remove that responsibility from you.
The site has three main functions:
- To provide education and information about civil defence emergency management and general preparedness in the Wellington region.
- To provide emergency management agencies with updates on the activities of the CDEM Group.
- To provide information to the public and emergency management agencies in the event of a disaster.
There are plenty of things that you can do to get prepared at home work and school. Check out these pages to find out more.

Conservation is an important consideration when you are in a survival situation. When there is a limited amount of water, make sure you think about recycling it.
- Civil Defence Centres

In a major disaster or emergency civil defence centres are activated by volunteers. Civil defence centres are located in primary schools or other community buildings like community centres.
- In your neighbourhood
-
Local help can be invaluable in an emergency. Your neighbourhood will have people with a variety of skills and resources that can be used in an emergency.

We recommend having a first aid kit at home, at work and in the car. The following list is recommended by the Order of St John as a minimum guide suitable for families.
