Practical introduction to the electronic keys to the flora in New Zealand
A field demonstration of two interactive keys:
1. Key to the NZ Coprosma species which has detailed information on each species. Bring a strong hand-lens or dissecting microscope to see hairs on the leaves and stems.
2. Key to NZ flowering plant genera. This new key to native and non-native plants is very large (1000 genera), but uses simple features such as flower and fruit colour. It is most useful for weeds and garden plants, and will give good results even if flowers or fruit aren’t available.
Participants can try both keys on fresh material from Otari’s gardens. Workshop ends about 12 noon. David will stay on after lunch for people who want additional practice, and to introduce those interested to the Grass Key.
