Water Quality and Ecology

Greater Wellington Regional Council monitors a number of rivers, streams, lakes, estuaries, rocky shores and beaches to assess environmental health, and increase our understanding of marine and freshwater ecosystems in the Wellington Region.

This information helps identify where further investigation is required, particularly where remediation of poor water quality or ecosystem health is desired. It also helps determine the effectiveness of our regional policies and plans. 

Monitoring results

Water quality and ecology can vary greatly across the region, depending on the site and the surrounding land use. Key monitoring results and highlights are presented in our annual report cards (see below).
