Walk & Wheel

Research shows that getting active on the way to school can improve children’s independence, confidence, road and personal safety skills and general health and well-being.

If you’re looking for a way to encourage long term active travel at your school then a Walk & Wheel promotion could be a good place to start. It’s easy to run and you can adapt it to your school's needs.

Some schools in the region have already started a Walk & Wheel promotion and seen some great results. These schools reported an increase in walking and cycling and parents gave positive comments about the promotions:

"She wanted to start biking to school - the stamps they get on their card was an incentive"

"We live too far to walk all the way to/from school. However, since the introduction of rewards, both children are more keen to walk part way. They are also interested in biking to/from school."

"We used to travel regularly by car but getting all onto wheels and the School's 'Walk To School' promotions/education has made this our main method [walking]."

"Having a 'ticket' clipped when he gets to school has been a real incentive for him to bike (that and the small prize)."
