Waiohine River Environment
The Waiohine River provides for a range of popular activities including fishing for Brown or Rainbow Trout and rafting. A number of popular tramps start in the Waiohine River area and the gorge is a favourite place for tubing, kayaking and swimming. There are two abseiling platforms located near the shelter at the entrance to the park. In the gorge area there is a scenic camping site and many picnic spots.
The Waiohine Gorge has spectacular scenic views with chiselled rock banks and crystal clear water. The Waiohine River is relatively untouched in the gorge and foothills, but further downstream it is used for irrigation on farmland and orchards and associated minor pollution problems from agricultural run-off during rain events.
