Waiohine Flood Plain Management Plan
Development of a Waiohine Floodplain Management Plan
Flood Protection officers have started to develop a Floodplain Management Plan (FMP) for the Waiohine River from the gorge through to its confluence with the Ruamahanga River. The FMP planning process has been developed and implemented over the last ten years in the Western part of the region (for example on the Hutt, Waikanae and Otaki rivers) and follows internationally recognised standards and processes.

The FMP process has an overall structure based around consultation with community and affected parties.
The FMP process is made up of three distinct elements:
Establishing the Context
- Define the problem
- Collect Information
- Describe elements risks
Identify Mitigation Options
- Evaluate a broad range of options:
- Non structural
- Structural
- Environmental
- Economic Analysis of Options
- Environmental Assessment of options
- Finalise options
Treat Flood Problem
- Select Mitigation Options
- Develop strategies
- Implement and Review
The process started in September 2008 with the establishment of a project team. Once the hydraulic modelling and flood mapping has been completed an inaugral meeting of the new FMP committee will take place. We will contact landowners shown to be affected in this process and ask them to view and comment on the hazards detailed on these flood maps.
The investigations are part of the first phase of the process and were planned to have been completed by the end of the 2009 calendar year but delays in critical investigation work has caused a pushed back this date. The construction works at the end of this process are forecast to be underway in the 2013/14 financial year.
When the critical information is ready and we have set up our first FMP committee meeting we will post further details on this webpage.
A newsletter seeking ideas from the community went out in June 2011. Click here to read the newsletter
