There is currently a medium risk warning in place for the Hutt River at Silverstream. Although toxic algae cover is low at this site mats have started to wash up on the rivers edge posing a risk to dogs and humans. River users should keep an eye out for toxic algal mats and avoid contact with them if present. Dogs should be kept on a lead or kept away from the riverside. Warning signs have been put in place at key access points to this part of the river.
At all other monitoring sites the risk from toxic algae remains low.
Weekly assessment of toxic algae cover is being undertaken at 20 popular swimming sites around the region.
