Passenger rail plays an important role in the region's public transport system. Without rail services, congestion on the region's highways and byways would result in a reduced quality of life, poorer environmental outcomes and a weakened economy. Up until recently, there was insufficient investment in the region's rail system to meet changing demands for quality and reliabitility. However, following both legislation enabling regional councils to invest in public transport and the purchase of Tranz Metro Wellington by Toll NZ, a new operating contract has been agreed between Toll NZ and Greater Wellington. The new 10-year contract has opened the way for investment in upgraded services. |
