 | | | Work underway on the stream | Friends of Owhiro Stream (FOOS) formed in 2003 with a view to restoring and protecting Owhiro stream. The stream is the only unpiped stream flowing to the south coast in Wellington City. It provides important habitat for aquatic animals and the surrounding bush acts as a valuable connecting corridor between places such as Karori Wildlife Sanctuary and the town belt.
Recent surveys show that banded kokopu and shortfin eels are living in the stream. The group hope to see all five species of inanga return to the stream eventually.
So far, with the help of the local community, Friends of Owhiro Stream has planted almost 3000 native trees. Wellington City Council have provided additional support by providing extensive weed control and supplying plants. FOOS have involved local schools with their planting programme. |
