What has the group done?
Starting planting along the river
The Friends of the Waikanae River come from a wide range of groups, organisations and individuals with a shared interest in the achievement of our vision. Theycontinue to doenvironmental restoration up and down the Waikanae River, between the river mouth and the SH1 bridge. Over the years thousands of native plants have been planted along the river banks and in surrounding reserves. The group monitors the management of the Waikanae River for flood protection and liases regularly with Greater Wellington's flood protection group. They work closely with all interested people to identify opportunities for rehabilitation of the river environment and do something about them.

The group'svision: the Waikanae River and its environment are enhanced and maintained in optimum condition for all to enjoy.

Current activities
The Friends have set up a nursery where they grow native plants for each planting season. They hold regular working bees every month and are encouraging adjacent residents to join the group and adopt an area close to where they live.

On the 1st and 3rd Monday mornings of each month, between 9am and 11am, working bees are held at either Jim Cooke Park (off Nimmo Ave West) or at the western end of Greenaway Road. All are welcome to bring a grubber, bucket and spade to help out with light weeding and mulching.
