Selected Land Use Register (SLUR)

Updated 26 May 2015 10:37am

Greater Wellington holds a register of sites where activities involving hazardous substances have or may have taken place. This register, which is formally known as the Selected Land Use Register (SLUR), is held on behalf of the eight Territorial Authorities in the Wellington region. The SLUR records sites that fit the definitions in the Ministry for the Environment’s Hazardous Activities and Industries List (HAIL).

Sites that are registered in SLUR are known (or suspected) to have been involved (historically or currently) in the use, storage or disposed of hazardous substances and as a consequence may contain residues of these substances. In some cases these sites will be “contaminated sites” and in others not; to distinguish between sites, SLUR classifies them under six categories.

SLUR records any information that is available relating to the site, such as:

  • The history of the activities that have or are believed to have occurred on the site
  • The nature and concentration of hazardous substances
  • Any remediation or mitigation measures that have taken place
  • Any site management plans
