Legal protection (covenants)
What is a covenant?

Greater Wellington supports the legal protection of our special ecosystems and habitats by way of covenants.

A covenant is a legally binding agreement that means that the landowner and subsequent landowners have to protect and manage the area concerned. This ensures that the feature cannot be destroyed.

Greater Wellington works in partnership with QEII National Trust to offer assistance with costs associated with a covenant and can give landowners advice on the covenanting procedure. Covenanted land may also be eligible for assistance with pest plant and animal control.

For more information on covenants, you can contact Greater Wellington's biodiversity co-ordinator on 04 384 5708, freephone 0800 496 734 or email at biodiversity@gw.govt.nz.
