Deer are found throughout Akatarawa Forest, mostly in heavy bush. Declining numbers of goats and pigs occur at low altitudes in more open country.
Loaded firearms are forbidden outside the designated hunting area.
An extensive network of bulldozed and foot tracks provides access to and within the designated hunting area. Many of the logging roads were formed over 60 years ago and may be overgrown. Many parts of the forest are rugged and isolated.

Mountain biking is a popular activity throughout the area. Keep a lookout for bikers.
Trail bike riding is allowed on designated routes. A permit is required - contact the Upper Hutt office.
Camping is allowed in some parts of the forest. Contact the
ranger to check whether your planned site is suitable as some parts of the forest may be affected by windthrow or flooding.
