Hunting in Kaitoke Regional Park
Hunting is permitted on the true right (north) of the Hutt River below the flume bridge. Please refer to the 1:50,000 NZMS 260 Topomap S26 or the 1:100,000 Tararua Forest Park map NZMS 274-02.

Loaded firearms are forbidden outside the designated hunting area.

You can expect to find red deer, goats and pigs in the park.

Conditions of hunting
Greater Wellington issues hunting permits  for up to six months for hunting in Kaitoke Regional Park. Hunters must carry permits with them at all times.

Please read the conditions on the back of the permit carefully. You must obtain permission of the landowner if you wish to cross private land.

Key points

  • Shooting during the hours of darkness is not permitted. 
  • The use of air rifles, .22 calibre rifles and shot guns is not permitted.
  • If dogs are to be used for pig hunting they must be branded and registered, and details recorded on the hunting permit. Report lost dogs to Greater Wellington's Upper Hutt office as soon as possible.
  • Wilderness camping is permitted in the designated hunting area.
How to get there
Kaitoke Regional Park opens at 8am and the gates are locked at dusk each day.

To enter the hunting area near the flume bridge, turn into Waterworks Road, off State Highway 2, Kaitoke. Drive to the end of the road, signposted as the Pakuratahi Forks carpark.

To enter from Te Marua, turn into Twin Lakes Road, off State Highway 2, 5km north of Upper Hutt. Park at the Pumping Station.
