Our region’s rivers offer many opportunities and challenges.
Whether you enjoy the fantastic recreational opportunities
available, live or farm on a floodplain, or want to improve the
environmental qualities of our waterways, you will be concerned
with proper management of our rivers.
Greater Wellington manages 320 kilometres of river channels and
280 kilometres of stopbanks in the region and is responsible for
one of the largest flood protection schemes in New Zealand.
Our activities around rivers include
flood protection, river management, recreation
facilities and caring for the river environment.

automatic recording stations across the region. This information
is updated every 3 to 6 hours.

Bathing water quality - river water quality data
from 23 popular recreation sites around the region. The sites are
tested for bacteria levels during summer and the results posted
weekly.
