Flood and Erosion Hazard Assessment
Mangaroa River

Why was a flood hazard assessment done?

  • Mangaroa River Valley was identified in early 1990's as an area where further development was likely
  • Subdivision of rural properties into rural-residential properties is taking place
  • To determine the flood and erosion hazards associated with various areas of land in the valley
  • To ensure new development is wisely located and avoids identified hazards
  • Residents are aware of the risks and hazards associated with their land and environs

What the flood hazard assessment covers:

  • Hydrological study
  • River and tributary channel survey for the area of hydraulic model
  • 1D/2D model of the Mangaroa River, tributaries, and floodplains
  • Mapping the flood extent, depth and velocity on the floodplain
  • A high level assessment of potential damages to houses, residential development and infrastructure on the floodplain.
  • Definition and mapping of river and floodplain hazard zones (flood and erosion)
  • Brief documentation of previous and existing work related to the Mangaroa River, its tributaries and the floodplain
  • Identification of critical water levels for flood warning
  • Summary of generic planning provisions
