The Paekakariki entrance to Queen Elizabeth Park is to get a new look with a new toilet block and shelters.
They will improve the amenities of popular picnic sites. Features include an outdoor shower, a disabled access toilet and drinking fountains.
The new block will complement similar improvements in other parts of the park.
Greater Wellington Landcare committee chairperson, Cllr Chris Laidlaw, says that Queen Elizabeth Park is the most popular of all our regional parks, with an estimated 400,000 visitors each year.
“These improvements will improve the quality of the park experience. We often have large groups, sometimes as many as 100 people, on organised picnics, so the upgrade is very necessary. Our regional parks network is one of the jewels of our region and Queen Elizabeth Park is deservedly the most popular for the variety of experiences it offers.”
As part of the renovation of the area, an old toilet block and shelter dating back to the 1960s are to be demolished.
Greater Wellington is calling for ideas from the public to help design the new shelters. Park Ranger Nikki LaMonica is keen to hear what people want as details are yet to be finalised and aspects such as location, size, seating and electrical fixtures are yet to be determined.
The new toilet block will be built by the end of August, with the shelters following over the summer.
