This award is open to schools in the Wellington region that are working with us to improve the health of the environment or promote environmental education for sustainability.

This includes schools participating in a Greater Wellington programme such as Take Action for Water, Take Action for Air, Trees for Survival, a project in a regional park, a project with a community group supported by Greater Wellington, or a transport initiative.

Relevant projects or activities include school or community based recycling schemes, organic waste reduction practices, habitat restoration, streamside planting, energy audits or reduction schemes, community advocacy of environmentally friendly practices, and sustainable transport initiatives.

Any person, school, or organisation (except Greater Wellington employees) can nominate a school for this award.

Applications and judging

Applications open in June and close in September each year. For more information download the Meridian School Sustainable Project Award application form. Email completed application forms along with any photos to awards@gw.govt.nz..

The award will be judged by a panel including a Greater Wellington Councillor, a teacher from Greater Wellington and an external expert.

Criteria

Key factors considered by the judges are:

  • Student ownership, leadership and involvement
  • Student educational outcomes
  • Environmental outcomes
  • Communication of progress and outcomes
  • Long-term project sustainability

Winners

The award is announced and presented at a function hosted by Greater Wellington in early December. The winning school will receive a certificate and $500, which should be spent on the winning project or on the teaching or implementation of environmental education for sustainability in the school.  Merit awards may also be made for suitable candidates.
