Road Safety
Greater Wellington takes road safety seriously. We have a number of programmes which contribute to the safety of road users throughout the region.
The Regional Road Safety Plan includes a road safety action programme. We work with territorial authorities, the NZ Transport Agency, NZ Police and ACC to implement the actions outlined in the programme.
The Ministry of Transport recently released Safer Journeys, New Zealand’s road safety strategy 2010- 2020. The long term vision of the strategy is, “A safe road system increasingly free of death and serious injury.” Land transport statistics for the Greater Wellington region are available at from the New Zealand transport Agency website.
Staff at Greater Wellington regional council work with Road Safety Co-ordinators and school travel planners throughout the region to promote road safety. We also work with Police, ACC and Territorial Authority partners to develop and implement Road Safety Action Plans. Currently we are working with these agencies to increase motorcycle safety.
