Rates
Greater Wellington's work is funded by a mix of rates, levies and external revenue. Regional rates, made up of general rates and targeted rates, make up 33% of our total revenue. Government subsidies (primarily for funding public transport) make up 42% and the water supply levy (charged to Wellington, Porirua, Hutt and Upper Hutt city councils) makes up a further 12%. The remainin 13% of revenue is from other external sources.
- How are my rates spent?
-
The rates you pay help Greater Wellington fund public transport, look after the environment, protect people from flooding, conserve the land and provide parks and forests for all residents to enjoy.
- What about water supply?
-
Greater Wellington collects and treats all the drinking water that Wellington, Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua city councils supply to consumers. Our water supply costs are not funded from regional rates; they are billed to those councils directly.
- How we collect rates
-
The local councils (territorial authorities) in the Wellington region collect rates on our behalf. While we set and assess regional council rates, your local council will invoice and collect our rates.
- Types of rates
-
We use different types of rates to help fund our activities. There are five rates (general, transport, economic development, stadium and river management) that apply to the whole region. Other rates apply to specific areas within the region.
- Remission and postponement policies
-
A brief description of our rating policies: remission of penalties; remission of rates in special circumstances; remission and postponement of rates on Māori freehold land.
