Programme stages
An effective travel plan process includes the following stages:
Initial discussions begin and schools register for the programme.
Schools in the set up stage can register their details using the online Registration Form.
Mapping Our Travel
Travel methods and issues are gathered from students and parents.
The Working Party in consultation with the school community, develops the plan.
Schools in the programme can apply for funding grants for their travel plan projects. Applications can be made using the online Grants Application Form.
Stage Four: Action and monitoring
Official plan launch and actions carried out.
Re-surveying and evaluation
Stage One: Set up
The School Travel Plan Coordinator will contact the school to arrange a time to discuss the programme. If the school decides to take part in the programme, the school, local council and Greater Wellington all sign a Memorandum of Agreement.
Once the agreement is completed the school completes a registration form which provides information necessary for the next stage.
A Lead Teacher is assigned to work with the School Travel Plan Coordinator to lead the process in the school.
Stage Two: Data Collection
Information is collected from parents and students to help with planning and set a baseline for future evaluation.
Data is collected through the;
- Class Survey: records how students get to school for one week.
- Parent Survey: records how students usually get to and from school; what safety concerns parents have and their ideas for initiatives.
- Mapping Our Travel: students plot their house and travel mode on a large scale map and discuss issues about their journey to school and how it could be improved.
The findings form the surveys and data from Mapping Our Travel is all included in a report which the Travel Plan Coordinator compiles for the school and the Working Party.
Stage Three: Planning
The Working Party comes together to discuss the results of the surveys and develop the Travel Plan. The group will also assist the school to implement and maintain their Travel Plan.
The working party attendees can include:
- Local Council Engineers
- Road Safety Coordinators
- Police Education Officers
- Parents
- Local community members
Initiatives in the plan are developed from information gathered through the initial parent and class survey. Initiatives can include walking school buses, walking buddies, carpool groups, safe walking route maps and road safety education.
Stage Four: Action and Monitoring
The Action & Monitoring stage involves the implementation of the plan and yearly reviews to measure progress. Additionally, on-going reassessment to improve the plan and refine its implementation is encouraged.
