Porirua businesses Take Charge of pollution
All Traffic Management Services (ATMS) and Berry and Mexted Auto Electricians are the first Porirua businesses to complete GWRC’s Take Charge pollution prevention programme.
Take Charge is a proactive programme that helps businesses reduce the risk of contaminants such as oil, paint and vehicle washwater entering waterways and ultimately the harbour. It is part of the Porirua Harbour and Catchment Strategy and Action Plan, signed up to by GWRC, the Wellington and Porirua city councils and local iwi to improve the health of the harbour.
Eight other businesses in the Wall Place and Kenepuru Drive area are working towards completion and GWRC Take Charge Coordinator Paula Hammond hopes the remaining businesses in the area with risk factors for pollution will come on board soon.
“It’s been a great effort from the local business community so far and we’re really keen for the remaining businesses in the area to get involved to make this the first fully certified Take Charge business cluster in Porirua,” she says.
ATMS Operations Manager Jade Ng says getting certified is easy. “Paula helped us take a look around at things that could harm the environment and we made a few slight changes to our processes as a result,” he says.
