Plenty to do and see at Kaitoke
The Wellington region is spoilt with the number of fantastic regional parks it has.
One, right on the doorstep of Upper Hutt, is Kaitoke Regional Park, which covers 2860 hectares in the foothills of the Tararua Ranges.
It’s a park that caters for all ages. Enjoy the centuries-old rata, rimu and beech forest in this magnificent natural setting. There are steep,bush-clad hills and a multitude of tracks of varying difficulty, with some suitable for wheelchairs.
For the young, or young-at-heart,there’s a great swing bridge across the Hutt River Gorge and, when the weather gets a bit warmer, swimming in the tranquil river pools.
Walk the Ridge Track for wonderful views of the Upper Hutt valley, or visit the magical spot used as a set for Rivendell in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
And if you have plenty of time on your hands, consider staying the night at the campground and enjoying the BBQ facilities.
