Planning an Event

Updated 29 November 2017 12:26pm

If you are planning to hold an event on or in the water - a swimming event or race, sailing, kayaking, jet ski or other boating race or event, you need to have been in touch with us.

What we will do for you

GWRC Harbours will check to ensure that your event does not clash with another major activity on the water that would put your participants at risk or cause the abandonment of your event.

We check to ensure that you have made adequate safety provisions for your event, and decide if you need dispensation from any Navigation and Safety Bylaws, e.g. uplifting of speed restrictions to hold a speed boat regatta, or an exemption to participants wearing lifejackets for an event such as a Dragon Boat race if you have sufficient alternative safety measures in place.

GWRC Harbours can also remind you of other safety precautions, such as checking the weather, good communications and monitoring shipping movements during the event.

To notify GWRC Harbours of a planned event, please complete and send in the relevant Event form, for either  Wellington Harbour  or Porirua Harbour

If you require any advice for planning your event please contact us on 04 830 4160.  See Harbours Events Calendar.
