Plan your car free journey online!
An innovative on-line cycling and walking journey planner is now available for Wellingtonians.
The digital planner is another technology first for New Zealand, following the Regional Council’s recent ground-breaking introduction of Google Maps for public transport planning.
Wellington company ProjectX Technology Ltd has created the programme, www.journeyplanner.org.nz . Improvements to mapping information and some more points of interest are expected to be added later.
As well as the expected information about how to get to places by cycle or on foot and how long the journeys will take, the planner has a range of other features - how hilly your trip will be, how many calories you are likely to burn, what parts of the route have street lights, where you will find drinking fountains along the way, toilet stops, and where there are seats for you to rest.
“The cycling and walking planner follows hot on the heels of Google Transit, a Google Maps feature that enables you to plan your travel using public transport, and Let’s Carpool, a quick and convenient carpool matching service”, said Greater Wellington Chair Fran Wilde. “While our very own Metlink website has had a public transport journey planner for several years, we now have a complete toolbox of travel options.
“With the cycling and walking journey planner you just type in your starting point and destination and all the navigation is done for you. And if you want to make a diversion, it highlights the new route for you instantly and gives you detailed directions.
“The planner covers the greater Wellington region so it’s a fantastic tool to help people explore parts of the region that are not so familiar to them. And, with summer on our doorstep, there’s no better time to get online and plan your next cycling or walking adventure.”
Greater Wellington supports initiatives that reduce traffic congestion and pollution. If it’s not possible to walk or cycle for your whole trip, you can plan your public transport journey on Metlink or on Google Transit.
Greater Wellington would love to get your feedback on the walking and cycling journey planner. You can contact Simon on 04 803 0381, or email simon.kennett@gw.govt.nz
