Our environment

Greater Wellington is responsible for regulating the use of the region’s natural resources. We do this through regional polices, plans and resource consents, helping the community to restore ecosystems (such as streams and wetlands), protecting and restoring areas with high biodiversity values and helping businesses become more environmentally sustainable.

We monitor and report on the state of the environment, manage environmental threats like pest plants and animals, protect the region from flooding, promote sustainable land managment practices, provide a 24-hour pollution response service and support environmental education programmes in schools.

Greater Wellington also looks after the region's harbours. We take care of navigation and safety, operate the signal station at Beacon Hill and respond to marine oil spills.
