Greater Wellington is responsible for regulating the use of the region’s natural resources. We do this through regional polices, plans and resource consents, helping the community to restore ecosystems (such as streams and wetlands) and helping businesses become more environmentally sustainable.
We provide drinking water to the region, monitor and report on the state of the environment, manage environmental threats like pest plants and animals, protect the region from flooding, provide a 24-hour pollution response service and run environmental education programmes in schools.
Greater Wellington also looks after the regions harbours. We take care of navigation and safety, operate the signal station at Beacon Hill and respond to marine oil spills.
