Recreational water quality
Welcome to Greater Wellington's recreational water quality website. Together with city and district councils, we monitor water quality at popular rivers and beaches across the region. During the summer period (15 November - 31 March) the monitoring results are updated weekly and displayed here for your information.
- It may have rained since the results were last updated. We recommend that you avoid swimming for up to two days after heavy or prolonged rainfall - especially in lowland rivers - as urban or agricultural run-off may affect water quality at these times.
- The recreational water quality guidelines do not cover toxic algal blooms, which in certain places under certain conditions, may pose a significant health risk.
