Bathing water quality

Welcome to Greater Wellington's bathing water quality website. Together with city and district councils, we monitor water quality at selected marine and freshwater bathing sites across the region. During the summer bathing season (15 November - 31 March) the monitoring results are updated weekly and displayed here for your information.

Cautionary notes:

  • It may have rained since the results were last updated. We recommend that you avoid swimming during or shortly after rainfall - especially in lowland rivers - as urban or agricultural run-off may affect bathing water quality at these times.
  • The bathing water quality guidelines do not cover toxic algal blooms, which in certain places under certain conditions, may pose a significant risk to contact recreation.
