Nikau Compliance Award
Guidelines for nominations
This award acknowledge businesses who currently have a consent with Greater Wellington and are using innovative approaches to proactively exceed their compliance requirements to reduce or avoid adverse effects on the environment.
Applications and judging
There is no application form - Greater Wellington Resource Advisors will nominate appropriate consent holders for consideration.
This award is not open to external applications. Please contact the resource advisor responsible for your consent or the Environment Helpdesk (Ph: 384 5708 ext:8755) if you would like to know more about the Nikau Awards.
Winners are selected by a judging panel including a councillor, external expert and a senior member of the Greater Wellington Environment Regulation Department.
Criteria
Key factors considered during judging are:
- The compliance history of the site, including any historical compliance issues and how these have been resolved
- Methods and processes in place to ensure compliance with consent conditions is achieved.
- Systems to monitor environmental effects of consent activities, both those targeted through consent conditions and any additional systems.
- The level of success achieved in minimising the environmental effects on the site, and how these are measured.
- The role of innovation in achieving compliance with resource consents and in monitoring consented activities
- Innovative practices which have assisted in achieving compliance with consent conditions and in managing associated environmental effects not specifically covered by the consent conditions
- Measures in place to ensure Greater Wellington is kept up-to-date with site practices and modifications to these which may impact on resource consent compliance (including any issues of possible non-compliance (e.g. incidents) at the site)
Awards presentation
The award is announced and presented at a function hosted by Greater Wellington in early December. The winner will receive a certificate and $500, which should be spent on a project that benefits the environment such as planting, compliance monitoring or professional development for staff.
