New lease of life for endangered dotterels
Endangered banded dotterels in the Wellington region can breathe a bit easier after a combined regional effort that saw 11 chicks survive this year. The success is thanks to great work by iwi, volunteers, Hutt City Council and GWRC to control access to dotterel nests and reduce predation by pests such as feral cats, hedgehogs and rats.
A rahui placed by Taranaki Whänui kaumätua on the breeding sites in October 2013 was lifted in March, though users of the road are advised to take care not to disturb the birds, which are hard to see. Pencarrow Road is one of the largest of only a handful of coastal breeding colonies of dotterels in the Wellington region, with around 20 breeding pairs at the site.
