New boatshed is a nod to history
A new boatshed in Wainuiomata Recreation Area is teaching visitors to the popular park about the rich history of the area.
The shed has been modelled on one that graced the banks of the Wainuiomata Reservoir from 1884, and which protected the small rowboat used to inspect the dam and reservoir.
After standing on the banks of the reservoir for more than a century, the old boatshed was decommissioned and the area housing it was opened up for public use. The replica shed has been built as a way to preserve and explain the history of the area.
The area is a popular place to visit for a peaceful picnic surrounded by wetlands, native bush and birdsong. An easy, flat walk or cycle takes you from the Wainuiomata Recreation Area carpark to the Lower Dam area along a quiet, private road. There are plenty of places to enjoy lunch and you can learn about the significance of the area to the region’s early development.
